HUB (Humanity Unlocking Biomaterials) is focused on advancing biomaterials research while applying it to clinical settings. It aims to connect researchers from well-funded institutions with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, HUB is led by the University of Michigan and the University of Washington to foster the development of biomaterials for medical treatments. The center provides seed funding to help initiate these projects.
Inspired by the Black feminist thinker bell hooks and her concept of centering margins, HUB encourages collaboration between those in power and those at the margins. They aim to include scientists and engineers whose work may not directly relate to biomaterials but has potential in the field. The initiative will support students and faculty at minority-serving institutions, bridging gaps and accelerating progress in biomaterials research. For more information on what HUB is, check out their press release at this link.
The progression of the HUB logo design is outlined below, beginning with extensive research. Understanding the concept of centering margins required a thorough dive into articles and documentaries provided by my clients. My market research revealed that scientific brands typically adopt a clean, innovative aesthetic. I also explored and analyzed logos that conveyed a sense of community and diversity. Once I was well versed in my research, I began sketching various ideas.
I try to gather as many ideas as possible in the initial sketch faze. Once I have a good idea of what is working best, I make several variations of the best sketches to expand on those ideas and create even more. Then, I move to creating those concepts on Adobe Illustrator.
When presenting the logo to my client, I provided three distinct icon concepts along with a detailed explanation of the icon's symbolic significance. By deconstructing the elements of my design and articulating their deeper meaning, I ensured alignment with the client's vision for the brand's social positioning.
I am currently creating a website for HUB which will launch soon.
